Tolkien Conference Switzerland 2027

The theme of this year’s conference is:
Maps & Landscapes in Tolkien’s Middle-earth
The conference explores how maps, landscapes and geography shaped Tolkien’s legendarium and examines the relationship between literary worldbuilding, historical cartography, cultural geography and Tolkien’s own real-world inspirations.
We are honored to welcome an outstanding international panel of speakers:
- John Garth (Keynote Speaker)
- Thomas Honegger
- Denis Bridoux
- Martin Simonson
- Simon Ayrinhac
- Jost Schmid-Lanter
Together they will discuss topics including Tolkien’s maps, narrative landscapes, medieval cartographic traditions, the geography of Middle-earth and the influence of Tolkien’s 1911 journey through the Swiss Alps.
The conference will be held entirely in English and is designed as a hybrid event. Participants may attend either in person in Lucerne or online from anywhere in the world. Online participation is free of charge, although registration is required.
We hope this conference will provide another opportunity for dialogue between Tolkien societies, researchers and readers from across Europe and beyond. It would therefore mean a great deal to us if Unquendor would consider announcing the conference through your website, newsletter or social media channels.
